Programme Overview

The Technical University of Munich MSc in Microelectronics and Chip Design provides advanced education in the development and implementation of modern integrated circuits and semiconductor systems.

Students build strong foundations in mathematics, physics, electronics, analog design and digital design before progressing to advanced front-end and back-end chip-development topics.

The programme allows specialisation in analog and mixed-signal design or digital design. Students learn to model complex systems and transform algorithms and system requirements into hardware architectures suitable for integrated-circuit implementation.

A major feature of the programme is a practical chip-design project spanning the curriculum, allowing students to participate in the complete design process and gain experience with real chip development and tape-out.

The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, which may also be undertaken in cooperation with industry.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a recognised Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification that provides eligibility for postgraduate study.

Suitable previous degrees include Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Computer Science with an electrical engineering focus, Physics or a comparable programme.

Applicants should have sufficient preparation in mathematics, electronics, programming, electrical engineering and related technical subjects.

Admission is conducted through TUM's two-stage aptitude assessment process.

The application normally includes:
Bachelor's degree certificate or current academic transcript
Transcript of records
Curricular analysis
Statement of purpose or motivation letter
Current CV
Proof of English-language proficiency
Passport

Applicants whose qualifying Bachelor's degree was earned outside Germany generally need a Preliminary Documentation certificate from uni-assist.

Additional documentation may apply depending on the applicant's country and educational background.

English-Language Requirements

The programme is taught entirely in English.

TOEFL iBT:
Minimum score 88

IELTS Academic:
