Programme Overview

ETH Zurich's MSc in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is the main Master's programme of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

The programme provides advanced education across modern electrical and electronic engineering and allows students to build an individual study plan with guidance from an academic tutor.

Available specialisations include Electronics and Photonics, Communications, Computers and Networks, Electric Energy Engineering, Systems and Control, Signal Processing and Machine Learning, and Biomedical Engineering.

Students complete advanced coursework, at least one semester project and a six-month Master's thesis. An optional technical industry internship may also be incorporated into the programme.

The programme is designed for students seeking advanced technical careers or research opportunities in electronics, communications, information technology, control, energy systems and related engineering fields.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology or a closely related academic discipline.

The previous degree must provide sufficient preparation in mathematics, electrical engineering, electronics, information technology and related programme-specific subjects according to ETH Zurich's official requirement profile.

Admission is selective and considers undergraduate academic performance, the standing of the previous university, subject preparation, motivation and recommendation letters.

Two academic recommendation letters are required.

Applicants must submit an approximately one-page motivation letter explaining their interest in the programme and chosen specialisation.

Applicants whose bachelor's degree was earned outside an EU/EFTA member state must submit the GRE General Test.

Expected GRE scores:
Analytical Writing: 3.5 or 50th percentile
Quantitative Reasoning: 165 or 90th percentile
Verbal Reasoning: 155 or 70th percentile

Meeting the minimum academic and test requirements does not guarantee admission.

English-Language Requirements

English proficiency at CEFR Level C1 is required.

A valid recognised English-language certificate must be submitted by the application deadline unless the applicant qualifies for an official ETH Zurich exemption.

ETH Zurich accepts recognised qualifications including TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge English certificates according to its current official language-requirements list.

TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge C1 Advanced certificates generally must be no more than two years old.

Applicants who completed their entire bachelor's degree exclusively in English may qualify for an exemption if the language of instruction is officially documented according to ETH Zurich's rules.

Applicants should verify the current accepted certificates and required scores on ETH Zurich's official language-requirements page before submitting their application.
