The Automobile & Motorsport pathway connects mechanical, automotive, aerospace, electronics, software, materials and data backgrounds with careers in road vehicles, high-performance engineering, motorsport and emerging mobility technologies.

Students can enter the sector through dedicated automotive or motorsport degrees, but mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems, computer science, materials engineering and aerospace engineering can also provide strong foundations. The most suitable programme depends on whether the student is interested in vehicle design, aerodynamics, powertrain, simulation, electronics, manufacturing, data analysis or race operations.

The sector is increasingly influenced by electrification, battery systems, software-defined vehicles, advanced driver assistance, simulation, data engineering, lightweight materials and sustainable mobility.

Career Direction

Careers

Automotive and motorsport careers cover vehicle development, performance, powertrain, chassis, aerodynamics, electronics, simulation, manufacturing, testing and race operations.

Motorsport is highly competitive and often rewards candidates who combine strong engineering fundamentals with Formula Student, racing-team, simulation, CAD, telemetry, programming or practical workshop experience. The wider automotive industry offers broader opportunities across manufacturers, suppliers, electric-vehicle companies, testing organisations and engineering consultancies.
